Masai Barefoot Technology or MBT is the first physiological footwear - that is footwear that has a positive effect on the whole body.
The health and fitness enhancing concept behind MBT is based on a simple insight:the human musculo-skeletal system is designed for walking barefoot on soft, natural ground. But we spend most of our time moving on hard, flat surfaces.
Swiss engineer Karl Muller discovered the beneficial effect of walking barefoot on natural ground for himself in the early 1990's-and also the reason behind it:the stimulating effect of natural instability on the body's supporting muscle system.
Muller began to develop a unique sole technology that would enable the body to walk naturally,by making all the positive effects of natural instability equally accessible on hard, flat surfaces. The Swiss engineers research and development work was inspired by the East African Masai-exceptional athletes with well shaped bodies, and little or no experience of back or joint problems.
Conventional shoes constrain and control the foot, stabilising the body in an unnatural way.
With its special sole construction the MBT creates a natural soft surface.
The natural instability underneath the feet ensures that neglected muscle groups automatically make the balancing movements that nature intended.
These activated muscles relieve pressure on joints and discs while walking, and make a every step taken in MBT footwear a tiny fitness exercise.
Even standing has a training effect on muscles, relieves joint strain and stabilises the whole musculo-skeletal system.
Wearing MBT's increasingly activates muscle groups needed to co ordinate and stabilise the body both when walking and standing. The muscular system is exercised all the way upto the neck, stretched and relaxed again, the body balanced-with every step.
The benefits of MBT..
activates neglected muscles
improves gait and posture
tones and shapes the body
can help with back, hip, leg and foot problems
can hlep with joint, muscle, ligament and tendon injuries
reduces stress on knee and hip joints.
In 2004 MBT celebrated selling over 1 million pairs and are now sold in 20 countries.
